About this fungus

Yellow American Blusher is a fungus in the Amanitaceae family. Its habitat and field characteristics are summarised below.

A yellow American Amanita with yellow-orange warts, a fragile ring and slow reddish bruising in the flesh.

What to check

Photograph and section the intact stem base. Look for reddish staining inside the base, yellow veil material, free pale gills and an amyloid white-spored Amanita structure.

Variation

The cap may begin yellow-brown and fade yellow. Reddish bruising can be slow or concentrated inside the stem base, while rain can remove cap patches and the ring may collapse.

Lookalikes

Amanita flavoconia and Amanita frostiana overlap in colour, while yellow forms of fly agarics have different basal veil patterns. Reliable separation may require microscopy and regional Amanita knowledge.

Habitat and range

Mycorrhizal in eastern North American broadleaf, conifer and mixed forest, fruiting mainly in warm-season rainfall periods.

Food safety

Edibility is uncertain or disputed.
