A bright, small Australian Amanita whose orange-yellow cap contrasts with pale gills and a ringless stem.
What to check
Expose the stem base and check for a cup with a coloured rim. Confirm the absence of a ring, a grooved cap margin and pale free gills.
Variation
Cap colour ranges from pale yellow to deep orange-red. Veil remnants may be felty and concentrated toward the centre rather than forming neat white warts.
Lookalikes
Amanita flavella can have similar colours but normally has a fragile ring. Introduced fly agarics are larger and have a different basal veil pattern. Australian Amanita identification is region dependent.
Habitat and range
Associated with eucalypts in southern and eastern Australia, including woodland, open forest and urban bushland. Fruiting extends from autumn into spring in parts of its range.

Poisonous.
