About this fungus

Hetier's Powdercap is a fungus in the Agaricaceae family. Its habitat and field characteristics are summarised below.

A very small, pale, floury-looking mushroom in woodland litter.

What to check

Confirm free pale gills, a powdery cap and stem, no basal volva and a white spore print.

Variation

The centre may become cream or buff and the powdery veil can be lost through rain or handling.

Lookalikes

Other Cystolepiota and small Lepiota overlap closely. Some small lepiotoid mushrooms contain amatoxins, so a superficial match is not safe.

Habitat and range

A litter decomposer in humid broadleaf woodland, hedges and shaded gardens, mainly reported from Europe.

Food safety

Inedible.
