About this fungus

Blushing Bride is a fungus in the Amanitaceae family. Its habitat and field characteristics are summarised below.

A pale to brownish Amanita that blushes pink-red where handled, cut or damaged.

What to check

Expose the complete stem base. Check for free pale gills, a skirt-like ring, universal veil remnants and staining across the cap, stem and flesh.

Variation

Young mushrooms can be nearly white, while older ones may be broadly brown or pinkish. Rain can wash veil patches from the cap.

Lookalikes

The western blusher group includes several closely related names. Dangerous pale Amanita species may share the ring, free gills and white spore print.

Habitat and range

A western North American ectomycorrhizal fungus, reported especially with oaks and conifers.

Food safety

Inedible.
